Behind the Book seeks a Social Media Marketing intern to coordinate BtB’s various social media platforms.  The position is ideal for a go-getter with a strategic mind and excellent communication skills. The intern will be an integral part of designing and implementing BtB’s social media strategy. The position will be based at our Harlem office.

The commitment is for one semester, minimum two days per week, hours are flexible.

Web/Social Media Marketing Intern responsibilities include:
*updating blog (wordpress) regularly with new content that features stories and pictures from our school programs
*Selecting and editing pictures, student work, and videos related to our programming for the blog

*Staying up to date on news relevant to Behind the Book, especially related to our authors, and posting commentary on the appropriate platforms
*Managing social media outreach and content on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Goodreads

The successful candidate will be someone who is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Experience with social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads required and with Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, and Constant Contact a plus.

The intern will report directly to the Director of Development.

PROGRAM INTERNSHIP

Behind the Book seeks a program intern to assist with the design, implementation and administration of our school programs. The Program Intern will work closely with the Chief Operations Officer and the Program Coordinators to support all aspects of our school programs. This is ideal for a student who is interested in education as a career path.

This is an unpaid position based in our Harlem office. Candidates can receive academic credit. Commitment is for one semester, 2-3 days per week, hours are flexible.

Program Intern Responsibilities will include:

  • Creating lesson plans, activities and worksheets for our school programs
  • Revising existing classroom resources to fit needs of new class
  • Cataloguing existing curricula, lessons and other resources in BtB’s Curricula Database
  • Creating bulletin board materials for teachers
  • Assisting as a volunteer in the classroom when needed.
  • Supporting staff with program logistics and administration, including cataloging student work and keeping track of program documents such as evaluation forms, release forms etc.
  • Assisting with student book publication as needed by scanning art work, drafting program descriptions, and other tasks as assigned by the Book Publishing Coordinator
  • Conducting research on books and authors for our programs, and ordering review copies of books.
  • Managing the Behind the Book library
  • Planning and participating in community events and fundraisers
  • Provide support to Executive Director and Board of Directors as necessary

Qualifications

The intern will be essential in supporting a growing organization, and will gain valuable skills and experience in project management and nonprofit work. We are looking for an outgoing energetic student with a sense of humor. The successful candidate will be someone who is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as are strong computer skills in Microsoft Office. A background in education theory or previous teaching experience a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience with lesson planning and teaching.

Candidates with an interest in and knowledge of writers and poets of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

DEVELOPMENT INTERN

Behind the Book seeks a Development Intern currently pursuing a graduate degree in a related field (MPA, MSW, etc) with an interest in non-profit fundraising and a desire to work in the field upon graduation. Although this is an unpaid position, candidates can receive academic credit and preference for open positions at the organization. Because we expect to have a development position available in Sept. 2014, the ideal candidate will be interested in filling that position at the end of their internship.

The Development Intern will work closely with the Director of Development to manage all aspects of the organization’s fundraising.

Commitment is for one semester, 2-3 days per week, hours are flexible.

Development Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting and compiling research relevant to our programming, such as best practices and innovations in literacy.
  • Researching prospective funders
  • Compiling and analyzing data from our evaluations, as necessary (no previous experience needed)
  • Assisting with donor communication, including thank you notes
  • Providing general and event planning support for the Board of Directors and Young Executive Board
  • Input data into donor database (Salesforce)
  • In addition to these responsibilities, interns may be assigned additional projects to work on independently according to their skills and interests.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, as are strong computer skills in Microsoft Office.

Experience with research and writing research summaries a plus.

A background in nonprofit fundraising a plus. Candidates interested in fundraising and philanthropy are strongly encouraged to apply.

ART DEPARTMENT INTERN

Behind the Book seeks an Art Intern to assist with the design, implementation and administration of our school programs. The Art Intern will work closely with the Student Book Coordinator and  Teaching Artists to support the art portions of our school programs. This is ideal for a student who is interested in art education and/or in teaching art as a career path.

This is an unpaid position based in our Harlem office. Candidates can receive academic credit. Commitment is for one semester, 2-3 days per week, hours are flexible.

Art Department Intern Responsibilities will include:

–assist in coordinating, assembling, and creating  books of student art and writing in our publishing program (see www.behindthebook.org/gallery)
–help plan and implement art workshops in conjunction with literacy projects for the classroom

–order and maintain art supplies

A knowledge of InDesign and art education, superb organizational skills, and a passion for fostering literacy in urban school settings are required. Intern must be able to work on his or her own Mac on book design assignments.
