Paul Griffin Delivers a Heartfelt Commission at MCA Graduation

As a summer intern at Behind the Book, attending the MCA graduation was a great way for me to see the tremendous impact that the physical presence of an author makes on a classroom. Just as watching the Harry Potter or Twilight series on a movie screen gives a viewer a completely different experience from reading the books, the 3D manifestation of any given situation adds depth to an individual’s experience of it. With this said, it’s one thing to read about Henry James, J.K. Rowling, Dr. Seuss, or in this case, Paul Griffin, and another to meet an author in real life. The MCA seniors had the amazing opportunity to not only read Paul Griffin’s Stay With Me, but to also ask him questions about his writing experience in getting to know him in a personal way. This beats reading an author biography on Wikipedia any day. If you are interested in learning more about Paul Griffin’s keynote address to the MCA graduates, read on.

The pulsing rhythm of a bongo drum and four dancers dressed in gorgeous red costumes initiated the MCA Graduation. The members of the graduating class of 2012, adorned in dazzling metallic blue gowns, followed the dancers in an elegant fashion. They walked toward the stage, exuding bright smiles to compliment their brilliant confidence.
After the salutatorian’s inspiring speech, a faculty member introduced author Paul Griffin as the keynote speaker for this year’s graduating class. Through Behind the Book, the seniors at MCA had the unique opportunity to learn about Paul Griffin’s writing journey—not to mention his touching life story—in the process of discovering themselves as readers and writers.
The students learned that before settling down as a writer, Paul Griffin experimented with many different career paths. He assumed occupations as an EMT, butler, waiter, dog trainer, construction zone worker, and teacher, among many other professions. However, he was able to translate his diverse work experiences into his ultimate passion of storytelling. As a result, his open-minded mentality toward his different career choices was directly related to the rich, vivid, and unforgettable stories that he shared with the students at MCA.
Paul Griffin’s unique ability to translate his stories into eloquent novels inspired and challenged these MCA seniors to pursue their own writing styles. The students in Miss Molly’s 12th grade class enjoyed reading his novel, Stay With Me. As Griffin shared his writing process with these students, they were able to experience first-hand the beauty and power of translating words onto paper. Eventually, they even wrote their own stories to compliment his. After this event, Paul Griffin was considered to be more than an author to them—he quickly became a mentor and friend.
Paul Griffin’s keynote address covered everything from American Idol to a gold pocket watch to dreams. He began his speech with the following questions: “How many of you believe that your dreams are gonna come true?” and “How many of you watched American Idol this spring?”
He went on to say, “The kid who won American Idol was from a small town in Georgia. He auditioned with nothing but jeans and a t-shirt.” Griffin elaborated upon the idea that although the surrounding pressures of media and materialism attempted to change this kid’s outward appearance, this singer, who eventually became the winner of American Idol, insisted, ‘I just wanna be me.’” His resistance to conformity made him an inspiration to millions of viewers all over the world.
In transitioning to his next story, Griffin stated, “Before the kid won American Idol, he worked as a pawn broker.” He pulled out a clunky gold pocket watch and reflected, “This was my grandmother’s gift to me for my high school graduation. It was my grandfather’s. He was my hero because he was a firefighter—he once saved a kid from a burning building!” As he reflected upon his grandmother’s kind words on the day in which he was in the same position as the MCA graduates, he began to take on the voice of his grandmother herself. He reflected, “She said to me, ‘This is your good luck charm. Don’t ever give this away. Every time you get down, pull it out and remember its message. Your dream is going to come true.’”
Paul Griffin admitted that after many years of rejection from various publishers, he attempted to sell the gold pocket watch not only for a monetary recompense, but also because he began to give up on his grandmother’s seemingly unrealistic words of wisdom. However, he decided to keep his grandfather’s pocket watch tucked away in his own little niche. After twenty years of rejection, he finally got that “magic yes” when he was 41 years old.
He reflected, “My dream was to make a living telling stories. I didn’t need to be living in a mansion in Manhattan—I just wanted to be able to take care of my family doing what I loved.” With his grandmother’s golden words and a whole lot of determination, Paul Griffin’s dream to be a storyteller came true.
After this heartfelt reflection, Paul Griffin returned his focus to the graduates dressed in blue. He then made his powerful commission: “When you walk out of here, it’s gonna be a challenge to make your dream come true. But whenever you feel down, I want you to think, ‘I come from triumph.’ Let your dream yell out of your heart.” As the graduates’ faces lit up, he concluded his speech with a clever but loving statement that powerfully resonated with every graduate: “You are not only gifted—you are gifts.”
So with three stories about three entirely different but equally influential individuals—a small-town kid who won American Idol, his very own grandfather, and himself—Paul Griffin commissioned these MCA graduates to pursue their own dreams—whether these dreams are singing, fighting fires, or telling stories—and to always keep their own gold pocket watches stowed away within their hearts as they began to venture out into the real world and beyond.

The Big Moment

By Ashante

The sun was so hot; dogs can be turned into hot dogs!

I was waiting at the Ninth Ward dog park for Tashon. It seemed like I was waiting for the next generation to come! “Where is this boy? I called him millions of times” I wondered to myself. “I need to tell him something really important” I thought.

I had my dog Spirit, to keep me company.”Bark, bark” said Spirit. “What is it girl” I asked growing curious. All of a sudden, I heard loud footsteps in the bushes. I looked up and saw a man clad in a big fur vest with a black suit. He also had a red and brownish hat.

“This can’t be serious” I said hysterically.

“Well it is” said Tashon. “Is that you?” I asked feeling his coat.

“Yeah, why?” Tashon inquired.

“Just asking” I mumbled, looking annoyed. “I know I’ve been not waiting for this get-up” I thought to myself.

“What’s with all this?” I pried.

“Why, you don’t like it?” Tashon asserted while posing.

“Uh…. No” I declared rolling my eyes.

“I did this for you” Tashon added, sitting on the bench next to me.

“Why, I like you the way you were” I remarked.

“Oh, I didn’t know” Tashon said.

“I wanted to tell you at the right   time” I said, getting closer to Tashon. “I always wanted to say that I love you” I confessed.

“I too,” said Tashon, getting closer to me.

I leaned to him, and he leaned to me…. You should know what happen by now……

Struggles

By Amanda

It’s the beginning of the school year and Lanesha  was starting her first year of high school . Lanesha had high hopes and wanted to focus on her work so she can get into a good college. But something was getting in her way, her boyfriend Tashon . Tashon’s parents took Lanesha in after Hurricane Katrina . Tashon had a lot of love for Lanesha but he didn’t know how to show it. One day Tashon was trying to get Lanesha’s attention and said “ ayee yooo girl I’m talking to you !”

Lanesha’s response was  “I know you not talking to me like that”

he said “well you the only girl in here RIGHT !?!’’

Lanesha said “you know what I am sick and tired of you. We’re done !!” Lanesha stormed out the room and that was the last time Tashon saw or heard from Lanesha.

He Finally Answered

By Dynalee

It was one day when Lanesha and TaShon were at the cemetery for Mama Ya-Ya’s funeral anniversary. TaShon saw Lanesha holding some other man’s hand and he got jealous. He couldn’t stand seeing someone else with the woman he loved. He walked away from the cemetery. As he did that, Lanesha realized who he was. “Is that really TaShon?” she said silently to herself. Lanesha was shocked when she saw him. But she thought he didn’t feel the same way about her all these years. She dropped her boyfriend’s hand and went over to him. She really didn’t know what to say to him.

“TaShon?” He turned around slowly.

“Yes.” He said.

She replied, “Where are you going?” He didn’t say anything.

“Don’t leave, you should stay so we can catch up. How have you been?” she said while she put her hand gently on his shoulder.

He finally answered.“Umm…….there’s something I need to tell you but I don’t know how to tell you.”

Lanesha wondered what is. So she said, “Just tell me.” He didn’t answer. “Stop acting like that and just tell me,” she said. He started to get frustrated because he didn’t know how to tell her.

So he screamed, “I don’t know how to tell you!!!”

She responded, “whatever, now I don’t even care anymore.”

He didn’t say anything to her. He just left and went home upset. He couldn’t tell the love of his life that he truly loved her!!!

The Day I Was Gone

By Dawn

It was so cold that I could hug a warm bear.  It was a cold, windy day, the leaves were blowing off the trees. People were walking so fast, because it was about to rain. I was trying to call Tashon, but he never picked up.

A student shares his piece with the class

Tashon finally picks up. “why you didnt pick the phone?”

“well I doing something, it was more important than our date”.

“so what more than important than this day?”

He said “well I dont know”

Walking down the block I see Gina. “hey how it going ?”

I said “nothing, well I’m trying to get Tashon to confess.”

“About what?” Gina said.

“I asked him about our date, why he didn’t come, he didn’t say anything.” I started to walk away from Gina, started to wonder, why ‘I don’t know’, the question running through my head, TaShon don’t like me.”

Maybe it’s time for me to go and just leave it alone.

Games Are Good to Meet People

By Daniel

I got my new game Black Ops II for X-box 360 from Gamestop. I put the disc in the tray. I went on zombie mode and I went on a team with three other players. Their names were Tashon2real,Wolf fang 0,and Devil odxo. I had a headset to talk to everybody, everyone had a headset too.

I said ”let’s kill some zombies”

Tashon2real said ”you sound like a girl I knew in New Orleans ”

”I did too” I said

”let’s just start” said Wolf fang 0.

Devil odxo said ”zombies.” I threw a grenade at the zombies. I killed 3 zombies.

I said ”my name is Lanesha, is yours Tashon?”

”yes” said Tashon2real.

”Are you from the Ninth Ward?”

”Yes” said Tashon2real.

”Are you the Tashon from Hurricane Katrina that knew Mama Ya-Ya?”

” I am, are you Lanesha that can see spirts?”

”Yeah, you want to meet up somewhere?” ”I live in New York, Manhattan” said Tashon2real.

”I live in da Bronx”.

”do you want to meet in the Empire State Building on November 23?” said Tashon2real ’

‘that is in two more days!”

”Yo watch it zombies behind you!” said Devil odxo.Wolf fang 0 and Devil odxo jumped over me and Tashon2real and killed 6 zombies.

” I’m getting eaten alive!”

“Me too!” Tashon2real said. Wolf fang 0 jumped to the mystery box, turned around and died.

“Devil odxo you can do it?” Devil odxo ran to the mystery box, got the thunder gun and shot most of the zombies, his gun ran out of ammo.

“There are more zombies behind you!” said Wolf fang 0. Devil odxo turned around and knifed a zombie seven times and died from the other zombies.

The Wrong Turn

By Jade

Like toddlers hating naps, TaShon was hating Lanesha for what she did. In TaShon’s mind it was Lanesha who was the one to let Mama Ya-Ya die.

“I really hope Lanesha doesn’t come. It’s because of her that Mama Ya-Ya is dead.”I thought to myself. As soon as she walked into the room I automatically went off on her.

“Why would you let Mama Ya-Ya die?”I screamed, everyone is looking at us now.

“You know that if I could save her I would.” explains Lanesha.

“Shut up! I don’t want to hear any more excuses, our friendship is over, and it is now a figment of my imagination.”

I left the reunion without a friend but as Mama Ya-Ya said “I still hold my tight grasp on life.”

A student holds up her signed copy of Ninth Ward. Jewell included a personalized message in each book.

Ninth Ward Flash Fiction Day 2 of 3

It’s time for the second installment of the student flash fiction pieces that explore what happens to Lanesha and TaShon ten years after the end of Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes.  Be sure to check out yesterday’s post too if you missed it.

A Class display about The Ninth Ward

Meeting Lanesha

By Ashton

I was walking around the neighborhood, trying to get to know the community. I just moved to a community called “Crystal Palms”, several counties away from the Ninth Ward. This place reminds me about my house in Ninth Ward, yet it could never be the same.

I walked to house 206 and knock the door. Tock! Tock! Tock! But no one responds. Tock! Tock! Tock! I knock again. I check if anybody is inside. The other neighbors said that she should be home around this time. I see that the lights were on, the television loud, with the weather channel on. I don’t want to remember Hurricane Katrina, but the weatherman said that there’s going to be a storm tomorrow. Tock! Tock! Tock! I knock for the last time. I heard a familiar voice say “GO AWAY!”

I said “Can you at least introduce yourself? You see, I just moved in, and I just wanted to get to know some of the neighbors.” She opened the door slightly and angrily said “GET OUT!” I only got a glimpse of her and she looked familiar. Then it hit me. It was Lanesha! I remember when we got separated at the bridge during Hurricane Katrina. It’s been eons since I last saw her and so I asked “Are you Lanesha?” She had a surprised look and asked me, “Who are you?”

I replied confidently, “I’m TaShon. Does that ring any bells?”

She yelled, “Get the heck out of my lawn!”

“Hey, we haven’t met in like a decade! Why are you so pissed off?” I ask.

Lanesha’s mind: Why is TaShon here out of all people? He never called, wrote or even E-mail me! He thinks he can just barge in and we can live happily ever after? He’s the one who killed Mama Ya-Ya!

The Last Goodbye

By Jennifer

When I saw TaShon again I knew it wasn’t going to be good. While we were talking he told me, “Why didn’t you get in contact with me all this time?”

I said to him “I didn’t know how to!”

The room was loud all you could here was both of us screaming. I said to him “why didn’t you come with me when I told you I was leaving the country?”

TaShon just stood quiet for a minute. He said “I was going to study here!” In his eyes you could see that he was still hurt! He raised his voice and said “why did you leave?”

I yelled “I had to leave, I had no future here I felt like I had to go reach to the very end of the world  to become an Engineer I always wanted to be, and I succeed what I wanted. That’s why I left.”

TaShon said “Really? I stayed here and I’m a good Veterinarian and I didn’t have to leave New Orleans’s.”

I couldn’t be here anymore so I picked up my dog Ginia and said “Bye, TaShon. I was trying to fix everything, but I guess not!”

He just stared at me. I went out and off again I go!

Time Changes Everything

By Mithila

Last night it was raining cats and dogs and now the sun is shining brightly. The weather was giving me mixed signals foreshadowing Hurricane Katrina. I was on my way to Times Square, where the new skyscraper will be built. I rushed out of the car and suddenly I see someone. He looks very familiar. “Can it be?”  It’s Tashon! I run up to him ignoring what others may think. Its New York, not like anyone cares.

“Tashon. Tashon.”

“Do I know you?” The moment he said that my face was filled with disappointment.

“You forgot me?”

“Umm… Lanesha?”

“ Yes it’s me. It’s been so long since the last time I saw you.” I couldn’t hold my excitement, although the moment was a little awkward. “How are you? How’s Spot and where is he?”I ask.

“I’m fine but….” He paused for a minute looking guilty.

A student sharing his piece with the class

“But what?”

“I gave him away,” he replied

“what?! Why would you do something like that? He was your best friend.”I yelled.

“After the hurricane we couldn’t afford to take care of a dog so we gave him away. The hurricane destroyed everything and our financial status is really low.” he said as tears come down his eyes.

“This was supposed to be a happy moment;” I think

“I came here looking for a job. It’s not that easy.”

“Well I can help you. Maybe there’s a job available in my company.” I offered

“No I don’t need anyone’s help” Tashon said.

“But … you.” I stutter. He turned away and stormed off.

As time changes, it changes the person with it. The devastating hurricane did change everything.

Modern Warfare 4

By Mehrab

I went in my house and it was as cold as winter. I turned on my PlayStation 3 and started playing Modern Warfare 4 Online Survival. I put my headset on and got my mic and started talking with random players. Suddenly, I heard someone talking and it sounded familiar.

“Lanesha?” I questioned.

“Who are you, and how do you know my name?” the voice said.

“I’m Tashon” I answered. “Tashon?” she questioned.

“Where have you been? I haven’t seen you for a long time!”

“I’ve been very busy” I said.

“Why haven’t you tried to visit me or contact me? I’ve been going through a rough time” she somberly commented.

“I didn’t have time to visit you” I answered back.

“You could have at least called me.” She exclaimed. It went silent for a while, then Lanesha left the game. I was very disappointed in myself. I wondered if she would ever speak to me again.

Forever Lonely

By Kasheda

I was taking my daily walk eating ice-cream. It is very hot here in South Carolina. It is like the ice never made it to the freezer. All of a sudden, I see my good ole’ friend… TaShon! I saw him like a week ago. In my head I’m thinking ‘’Who’s that pregnant woman and that child with him? Maybe I should ask him…’’

“Hi Lanesha!’’

I then say “Hi”

“Have you met my wife Katie and my daughter Sasha? Also the baby on the way, Lorenzo.’’ In my head I was disappointed but I didn’t want to show it. So I just said, ‘’Oh nice to meet you!’’

Katie says ‘’Hi! TaShon has been talking a lot about you lately. It is day and night all the time Lanesha this and I remember when Lanesha and I… but I am glad I finally got to meet the world famous Lanesha!’’

I say ‘’Oh, he does. Nice. I am glad to meet you too!’’ In my head I’m excited because he really talks about me!

Then TaShon says ‘’Well Katie, take Sasha to play on the slide.’’

‘’Okay Sasha let’s go.’’

In my head I’m saying ‘’OMG I cannot believe that my crush is alone with me!’’

Then TaShon says ‘’So. What’s up?’’

Ninth Ward Flash Fiction Day 1 of 3

If you’ve been following our blog, you might remember that we piloted a new digital literacy project this spring with author Jewell Parker Rhodes and her book Ninth Ward.  During the program, each student wrote a flash fiction piece about the characters in the Ninth Ward reuniting ten years after the end of the book.  What better way to wrap up the digital literacy pilot than by publishing the student’s short fiction?

These flash fiction pieces will be posted in three installments: today, tomorrow and Friday.  We encourage you to return to the blog each day to read and comment on the students’ great pieces.  Happy reading!

Author Jewell Parker Rhodes looks up her comments on the students’ previous blog post to share with the class.

The Break Away

By Tommy

“Hey Mama Ya-Ya, I can’t wait for your anniversary today, it’s going to be so much fun.”  Her ghost smiles, but doesn’t say anything. I get dressed and go downstairs to see if everything is ready for the anniversary party.  The drinks were in the refrigerator to the left, and the snacks were on the table to the right. “Now, all I have to do is wait”, she said to herself as she checked to make sure everything was perfect.

I sat on the couch and turned the TV on.  The Oprah Winfrey Show was on.  “Ding-dong, ding-dong”, I was so excited to see who it was!  Maybe it’s Ginia, I have not seen her since the hurricane and I miss her.  I opened the door expecting to see Ginia or someone else I have not seen in a longtime, but to my surprise when I opened the door, it was TaShon!

I opened my eyes in surprise and thought to myself “why does he have to come.”  I didn’t want to be rude, so I let him in.

“Hey Lanesha, how are you?” I tried to ignore him but it was no use.

“Lanesha! are you listening?”

“Yeah, I’m just… mad at you.”  “Why?” I’m mad at you because after all this time now you decide to come? It’s been 10 years, I have missed you a lot, we’ve survived Hurricane Katrina, how could you forget me?”

“I’m sorry Lanesha, I have been so busy.”

“Too busy for me huh?”  Lanesha said in disbelief.

“Okay, well, sorry, I’m too busy for you too!” Lanesha said angrily!

“Bye TaShon, I don’t ever want to see you again!”

Students gather around to get their books signed. Ms. Rhodes autographed each student’s book with a personal note.

 Past and present

  By Hassan

”Im on the corner, do you want something from the store?”Tashon asked his wife.

“Yeah a bag of doritos,” Tashon’s wife said.

“Hi do you have money for drugs?” said Lanesha.

“Do you even know who I am? I am Tashon from Ninth Ward.  I am a successful person with a successful animal clinic. I dont have time drug dealers. I know who you are, you are Lanesha” Tashon said.  “What do you do Lanesha?”

“I dropped out of school and became  an alcoholic and a drug dealer, but I’m glad things went your way Tashon.” Lanesha said.

“Thanks but I will be on my way to the store. Bye, see you later.” Tashon said.

Stalker or Not ?

By Sayeda

I have a feeling. A feeling as if someone was following me through the misty, cool air. I brush my hair away from my eyes. “BOOM, BOOM,BOOM”. Someone was running after me. I run. I run with all my strength and might to my workshop. I lock the door, “click.” I breathe hard as I sit down near my blueprints. I’m thinking to myself “who is this guy and what does he want from me?”

“Knock, knock” a hand pounded on the door. My instinct was to stay down but I heard my name “Lanesha?” I walk over to the door and open it a slight bit. A man stood there with a New York Yankees baseball cap.

“Who……… who are you?” I manage to spit out.

“It’s me TaShon, remember? Hurricane Katrina?” the man said.

“Does this idiot think he can joke around with me about Hurricane Katrina?” I think. “Look I don’t know you and don’t want to. If you think you can just to me and mess with me about Hurricane Katrina you’re sick” I say raising my voice.

“Lanesha just listen —.”

“Look I’m sorry to cut you off but I don’t know you” i say losing my patience.

“Lanesha just hear me out” he says. ” NOOOOO. GET WAY FROM ME!!! YOU ARE A CRAZY STALKER AND YOU THINK YOU CAN FOOL ME WITH HURRICANE KATRINA!!!!!! YOU’RE AN IDIOT!!!!! HOW DO YOU EVEN KNOW MY NAME?” I scream my lungs out, I can’t take this anymore.

“Look Lanesha you do know me. I’m TaShon, you survived Hurricane Katrina with me. Mama Ya-Ya died and…. Spot….. ghosts. You know me Lanesha. I know you know me” he says.

“How do you know Mama Ya-Ya died?……….YOU ARE TASHON !!!” I say.

“YES” TaShon says. I look at TaShon and then…. I CRY.

 Ten Years Later

By Taylar

It was a drowsy, dark day and it was raining cats and dogs. Laneasha is in love with Tashon, but he doesn’t know it. She does not want to remember him because she’s not sure if she’s in love with him or that’s just the long years they had together. Tashon actually has feelings for Laneasha too, but Laneasha doesn’t know it neither even though he gave her

all the signs, but she just won’t get it.

So one day they met in the park then those three special words that you hear from your one true love.

Tashon looked lovingly into Laneasha’s eyes and said “I love you, Laneasha, ever since we were in the hurricane together I fell in love with you”.

Laneasha replied, “I love you too, Tashon,” and they kissed like Prince Navene and Tanisha in “Princess and the Frog”.

Ms. Mayers shows a student her support while he reads his flash fiction draft to the class and Ms. Rhodes.

 Heart Broken

By Melvin

“Lanesha I can’t believe that you are going around saying that you are the one that saved me from the hurricane. You are a liar,” Tashon said.

“oh really,? Said, Lanesha. I was the one that saved your life by finding that boat, jumping off the roof, and swimming in that dirty water.”

Leave!

By Kendell

“Tashon is that you?!”

“Lanesha what is she doing here” Tashon said to himself quietly. “Lanesha stay away.” I said with an attitude.

“Why do you want me to stay away? Remember its me Lanesha. Me and you survived the hurricane together.”  Lanesha said looking puzzled.

“That’s why I want you to stay away.” I said.

“ok bye” she said with a low toned voice.

“Yeah” Lanesha turns back around and gets ready to say something. “ If me and you survived the hurricane together why do want me to go away. I saved your life you saved my life.” She said

“Because every time I think of you I think of the hurricane and Mama Ya-Ya   dying. You was suppose to protect her not let her die.” I said that so fast that she probably thought I was Flash.

“I know but there was no way to protect her from a hurricane I would’ve died too .” she said.

“What about Spot?” I asked

“ He died” She said.

“You can’t take care of anything.” Lanesha turned around and left and I was hoping I would never see her again.

Behind Brooklyn: Fun & Finds at the Behind the Book Scavenger Hunt

Map of the Scavenger Hunt route

The Behind Brooklyn scavenger hunt this Sunday was quite an adventure for all our explorers. Our intrepid participants journeyed from Fort Greene to Red Hook, bravely pressing onwards through rain and shine to visit each awesome bookstore, bar and landmark. Some teams won fabulous prizes for their creativity and scavenger prowess, but the journey itself was fun for everyone.

Let’s look at some of the highlights that were captured on camera…

We began the hunt to good music and cold beer at Der Schwarze Kolner Beer Garden, where teams registered with the very friendly Young Executives Board.

Our lovely young executive board!

Busy registration!

When we reached Dean Street, there were a few historic sites that we got to pay homage to. At the old home of Isaac Asimov (author of I, Robot) we got in touch with our inner robot, breaking out some sweet moves on the sidewalk.

Staci and Sasha, doing the robot for extra points.

The game got more intense at Book Court when we had to find four scavenger hunt cards behind, in between and under books. One successful player proudly holds up the cards she found between copies of the new Maurice Sendak book. Another uncovers some more beneath the Helmut Newton suitcase.

After a quick break for beer at Gowanus Yacht Club, it was time to hop on the Subway to go to Dumbo.

Beautiful views from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade

At the very end of the scavenger hunt, we finished at Freebird Books and Goods, where we had a party on the back patio for everyone involved. After traversing Brooklyn, it was great to be able to sit down and talk about the day with our friends and teammates.

At the afterparty on Freebird’s patio

Author Ben Greenman used his expertise as an artist to determine and announce the winners of the creative challenges in the scavenger hunt, while everyone relaxed with free food, and beers courtesy of The Brooklyn Brewery. Local indie band, Grandlake Islands, kindly played for us.
